MACHGRADE M133 Upgraded Turbochargers are precision-engineered using advanced CNC machining techniques, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and consistency in the production of the aluminum Custom Compressor Billet Wheels and Enlarged High-Flow 9 Blade Turbine Wheels. These turbochargers are based on the stock genuine KKK B03 turbochargers and are designed to provide a seamless Plug&Play solution for Mercedes AMG A45/CLA45/GLA45 with 2.0T M133 engine. There are 2 versions available of the M133 hybrid turbochargers, each optimized for a peak power range of 460 – 550 Crankshaft Horse Power, as follows:
Specification of the turbocharger
MACHGRADE M133 460
This hybrid turbocharger is designed to deliver 460HP and has been engineered with the following features:
- MACHGRADE custom journal bearings ‘360’ – these are designed to withstand high rotational speeds and loads, ensuring longevity and reliability of the turbocharger.
- Modified compressor housing – CNC machined to accommodate the larger billet wheel and to optimize airflow.
- Modified seal plate – designed to provide a high-integrity seal, preventing oil leakage and maintaining optimal turbocharger performance.
- Enlarged/custom compressor Billet Wheel 6+6 blades – CNC machined from a solid billet of aluminum for strength and durability, this wheel has been designed to maximize airflow and boost response.
- Genuine Turbine Wheel clipped and lightened to help reduce the backpressure – this modification improves exhaust gas flow and reduces turbo lag.
Further turbo highlights common for each turbo:
- Genuine KKK
- compressor housing – designed to withstand high temperatures and pressures.
- exhaust manifold – optimized for efficient exhaust gas flow.
- bearing housing – provides robust support for the turbocharger’s rotating assembly.
MACHGRADE M133 550
This hybrid turbocharger is designed to deliver 550HP. The full list of changes applied is the same as with the 460 package, with the exception of the larger Billet Compressor and Turbine Wheel which is a High-Flow 9 Blade design in this case. This larger wheel design allows for increased airflow and higher boost pressures, enabling the turbocharger to support the higher horsepower output.
Getting expected power
To fully harness the power potential of the turbocharger, it’s crucial to implement all supporting modifications. These enhancements, which may encompass upgrades to the fuel, exhaust, and cooling systems, are indispensable to accommodate the elevated power and performance requirements. Additionally, an ECU remap is crucial to maximize the benefits of these hardware enhancements. For instance, a Mercedes GLA45AMG equipped with our Hybrid Turbocharger can achieve a remarkable output of 520HP and 545Nm of torque. Refer to the attached power curves in the gallery for a visual representation of this performance capability.
Engine tuning and optimization
Engine tuning is a crucial aspect of maximizing the performance of your vehicle, especially when upgrading turbochargers. The process involves a series of modifications to the engine’s system, enhancing its power output and efficiency. For the M133 engine, these modifications can significantly boost your driving enjoyment.
Key areas of focus in engine tuning include:
- Air Intake: The engine requires a balanced mix of air and fuel to function optimally. Enhancing the air intake system can improve this balance, leading to better performance. This can be achieved by ensuring the air flow sensor (MAF/MAP) on the M133 is not restricting air flow, especially when more air is being drawn into the engine. Upgrading to a 4 bar air sensor can help cope with large power gains.
- Intake Headers: These play a crucial role in directing air during the engine’s suck phase from the filter into the engine cylinders. The shape and flow characteristics of the intake headers can significantly affect fuel atomization on the M133. Most intake headers require performance upgrades for optimal results.
- Camshaft: The camshaft profile plays a significant role in the engine’s power output. Upgrading the camshaft can result in large differences in power. Fast road cams usually increase power over the rpm range, sacrificing a bit of low-end power but improving higher rpm power.
- Fuelling: As power increases, the engine becomes more fuel-thirsty. It’s crucial to upgrade the fuel system to match the increased power demands. This can involve upgrading the fuel pump and high flow fuel injectors.
- Turbo Upgrades: Improving the intake with a larger turbo and better flowing intercooler can result in significant power gains. However, it’s important to note that larger turbochargers may experience low-end lag, while smaller ones may lack top-end power gains. Modern advancements like variable vane turbos and twin scroll turbos can help mitigate these issues.
- Exhaust Upgrades: An efficient exhaust system is crucial for optimal engine performance. Upgrading the exhaust system can improve flow rates and power gains. However, it’s important to choose the right exhaust width to avoid reducing the exhaust flow rate. The ideal width for power gains is usually between 1.5 to 2.5 inches.
It’s important to note that each of these modifications should be tailored to your specific driving style and vehicle use. For instance, a race cam may not be suitable for daily driving due to its focus on high rpm power. Similarly, when upgrading the turbo, it’s crucial to consider the engine’s limits and upgrade to higher quality components to handle the power.
Lastly, regular maintenance and servicing are essential to ensure the longevity and performance of your engine, especially after tuning. Regular oil changes with the correct grade of oil are critical to prevent engine wear and maintain optimal performance.
With the right tuning and maintenance, your M133 engine can deliver exceptional performance and driving enjoyment, especially when paired with our MACHGRADE Upgraded Turbochargers.
