Description

MACHGRADE Hybrid Turbocharger comes in two version designed for 500 and 550HP. The production of each MACHGRADE option starts with a stock genuine KKK turbocharger, and the main upgrade consists of a bigger, custom CNC billet compressor wheel with 6+6 blades. The 500 unit keeps the original turbine wheel (exhaust, hot side) and OEM bearing solution, which comes with the advantage of an insignificant increase of turbo lag. The more extreme 550HP version has an upgraded hot side, which allows for a better flow of exhaust gases and less choke for engine in higher RPMs. Both MACHGRADE hybrids are fully plug and play.

Specification of the turbocharger

Engine Tuning and Turbo Upgrades

Engine tuning is a crucial aspect of maximizing the performance of your vehicle, especially when installing a new turbocharger like the MACHGRADE Hybrid Turbocharger. Tuning involves adjusting the engine’s control unit to optimize performance, fuel efficiency, and power output.

The 2.5 TFSi engine, as fitted to the TTRS and RS3 models, is a special engine that has won awards every single year in the ‘2.0-litre 2.5-litre’ category from 2010 to 2018 in the annual competition for International Engine of the Year. These engines are designed to tolerate power figures in the region of 700bhp, making them a great base for a tuning project.

Engine Mods for your 2.5TFSi

When upgrading your turbocharger, it’s essential to consider other modifications to support the increased power output. These can include:

  • Engine Tunes: Engine tuning or remapping provides the most advantage in terms of cost savings. Aftermarket ECUs and piggyback ECUs are all alternatives.
  • Intake and Exhaust: These mods can help enhance power after other mods by removing the restriction.
  • Turbochargers and Superchargers: Forced induction is the most efficient approach to increase air supply, allowing you to burn more fuel and make more power. It is one of the most costly upgrades but provides the best gains.
  • Head Work: The goals of porting and flowing the head are to get air flowing into the engine while removing flow restrictions and turbulence.
  • Fast Road Cams: One of the most significant mechanical changes, but they must be installed by someone who knows what they’re doing. They are not always easy to source but you might find a local firm to regrind a stock camshaft.

2.5 TFSi Tuning Stages

Tuning typically involves different stages, each with specific modifications:

  • Stage 1: Includes intake manifolds, sports exhaust header/manifold, panel air filters, fast road camshaft, remaps/piggy back ECU, drilled & smoothed airbox.
  • Stage 2: Includes fuelling (fuel pump and port injectors), ported and polished head, induction kit, fuel pump upgrades, fast road cam, sports catalyst & performance exhaust.
  • Stage 3: Includes internal engine upgrades (head flowing porting/bigger valves), engine balancing & blueprinting, twin charging conversions, crank and piston upgrades to alter compression, competition cam, adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger).

2.5 TFSi Turbo Upgrades

The more air to get into an engine, the more fuel it can burn and uprating the induction with a turbocharger upgrade makes massive power gains. When your car is turbocharged, mods are going to net you a larger power gain as turbo engines are made using stronger components.

Upgrading the downpipe will allow the turboto spool up faster and will also help to reduce turbo lag. A larger turbo, such as the MACHGRADE Hybrid Turbocharger, will allow for a significant increase in power. However, it’s important to note that a larger turbo may introduce more turbo lag due to the increased mass of the turbocharger.

2.5 TFSi Remapping

ECU remapping can help to fully realize the potential of all the parts you’ve fitted to your 2.5 TFSi. You will see large power gains from remaps on a turbo engine. Even on a mildly tuned engine, you can see significant power gains. The most significant power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction.

2.5 TFSi Fuel and Ignition

After you have increased the air intake, you should also improve the fueling. More power needs more fuel. It’s essential to keep the air/fuel ratio right. Ignition timing can be optimized to burn more mixture in the combustion cycle.

2.5 TFSi Exhaust

Performance gains are possible with the right exhaust. Stick with 1.5 to 2.5 inches for best results. In most cases, you will find that 2.5-inch exhausts are going to be a performance compromise on small engines but are the optimum choice on the 2.5 TFSi.

Please note that these modifications should be done by a professional to ensure the best results and to avoid damaging your engine. Always remember that each car is unique, so what works on one vehicle may not work on another. Always do your research and speak to a professional before making any significant changes to your vehicle.
